Binge Watch: The Vampire Diaries – The Truth about Vampires

This past week, I wasn’t able to watch our normal television shows because He was out of town on a business trip. Rather than start on any productive household projects, I decided to use this opportunity to start a show that I knew He wouldn’t want to watch: The Vampire Diaries.
I was a huge fan of the Twilight Series Books and practically read them all in one week. I enjoyed them because they created an alternate reality that I could become lost in. The Twilight Movies were a huge disappointment. The characters in my head from the books are much more developed than the actors and actresses portrayed them to be. In Twilight there is a love triangle between the girl, a vampire and a werewolf. In Twilight Bella wants to become a vampire. So far in The Vampire Diaries there appears to be a love triangle between the girl and the vampire brothers, and Elena has no desire to become a vampire. In comparison I am enjoying this television series much more than the movies.

I am a Fanpire: Fan of Vampires.

Starting in my youth with Buffy, then TwilightTrue Blood and now this, I am coming to accept that I am a Fanpire. The Vampire Diaries is a typical teen drama with a twist. It is a cross between Twilight and a show like the OC or 90210. I just finished Season 1, watching all episodes in 4 days.

The show is set in a small town and the premise is simple. Vampires and witches exist and even though this can create issues (people are missing or murdered), high school is still important. There is angsty drama and humor that keeps each episode interesting. As I began to learn the characters and how they are related, or when they once dated, I practically felt like I was back in high school. The main character, Elena, keeps a diary of all the teen drama and as she begins dating a vampire, I am sure her diary is much more interesting than mine ever was in high school.

The show is slow moving, but by the sixth episode I was hooked and knew that I would continue watching.

“First person account of the Civil War? That’s like porn for a History Teacher.” – Alaric

In a small town, the mystery exists both in current day as well as through flash backs to history. What happened in the Civil War time prompts a lot of the vampire drama in current day. (I can pretend that I am learning some history from the show, but probably not!)

There are rings that allow vampires to walk in the sun, and rings that allow humans to come back from the dead. Lesson of season One is that I should get a ring to protect me.

Looking forward to my next weekend alone to get started on Season 2.
