Doctor Who Season 10: Knock Knock Review
|So far, Bill’s journey in the TARDIS has involved a trip to the future, a trip to the past, and now, she embroils the Doctor in a mystery in the present.
First, how great is it to have a TARDIS for moving? Simply materialize the machine around the stuff you have to move, and it’s easy!
Second, when the Doctor was telling Bill about Time Lords and mentioning regeneration, was his reaction to being asked about it just a little odd? Like, maybe he’s just scared because he doesn’t know how many he has? Does he know another one is coming? Or, has it already begun? We’ve already seen a Doctor hold off a regeneration long enough to say goodbye.
Third, watching the way Bill was looking at the picture of her mother, is there something more coming with her?
Fourth, the way Bill referred to the Doctor as “Grandfather.” Is this a callback to the picture of Susan on the Doctor’s desk from “Pilot?” Misdirection? Something ominous? Only time will tell.
Anyway, on to the story. Bill and a bunch of other students are trying to rent a place together, and they can’t afford much until a kindly looking old gentlemen with mysterious eyebrows offers them a place. They rent this large manor estate and hear banging somewhere. As they go to inspect, they discover the alien source of the banging – a Time Lord investigating because the trees were rustling, but there was no wind.
Continuous suspicious things happen. If it were another show, it would be ghosts. But in Doctor Who, it’s never ghosts.
Now, I’m not sure how the Doctor put things together, particularly the part about figuring out who the Landlord really was. Frankly, I think the spin on it was a little on the dumb side. However, even when the writing and the plot twist lets the actors down, I’ll be darned if Peter Capaldi isn’t still outstanding in the role. Each episode makes me sad that his time is ending.
Piano coming from the vault? “We’re both prisoners?”
And, in a big reveal, whatever the Doctor has in the vault, he can come and go from there apparently as he pleases.
Little memorable things:
Nice to know the Doctor jammed with Quincy Jones once.
“That’s what they’re called – Driads?”
“Well, I can’t just call them lice, can I?”
“Can you not interrupt? I’m doing my thing here!”
“You don’t have to go to outer space to find monsters. There’s plenty of things right here that want to kill you.”
She says: A good twist on a scary creaky house…. but now i’m nervous. I hear the wind outside and our door creak, and I don’t know where those little alien bugs went.
