Following the popularity of the new MacBook with only a single USB-C port, we’ve seen a sudden boom in the number of options available for this type of hub or docking port situation. ORICO is a relatively new name for me, but they have a solid lineup of USB peripherals and hubs, and this new product makes a decent addition.

The device itself is simple in operation: Plug it into your MacBook or other USB-C port, and it provides with you a pass-through for power, and three USB 3 ports for your devices. You can treat this as a docking station by leaving it on your desk with your devices plugged in all the time, and simply plug in the single connection to your computer when you sit down. The device is also light-weight with a compact cord, so it’s easy to travel with, and doesn’t weigh you down.

Similar products offer a wider variety of ports, but I like the singular purpose of this model. I have lots of USB devices, so USB ports are useful to me. Don’t junk things up with a bunch of extra ports I’m never going to use, like VGA or full-size SD ports.

Because this device is designed to be mobile, it’s lightweight, and doesn’t include rubber pads on the bottom to prevent it from sliding around on your desk. This means if you’re frequently plugging and unplugging things from the USB ports, it feels a little flimsy. On the other hand, as a travel companion, light weight is awesome, and not having rubber feet to get stuck or torn off getting shoved into and pulled out of a bag is a great thing.

I can definitely recommend this device, having had great experience with ORICO products in the past, and seeing this device perform as expected. The price point is also excellent for those on a budget, or not willing to completely commit to USB-C yet.
